A Hand drawn, hand painted, from scratch, without tracing, re-invention of Japanese Master Printmaker Katsushika Hokusai's "The Great Wave". (1760-1849).
There is A LOT of ART HISTORY to this One Piece ;^D
Crafting this parody re-invention was more challenging then Hawks first realized. The idea was commissioned as a gift for a young soldier, who is a fan of the anime sensation The One Piece.

Master Hokusai's original version, even though it looks like a watercolor painting is, in reality, a series of woodcuts that make up a screen-print (A similar method is practiced to make T-shirts and paper $$$$). Only about 100 prints were successfully made from the original woodcuts, and only a handful still live today in museums throughout the world.

-The OG Hokusai kanji translated:
This is the title of the series,
富嶽三十六景: (Fugaku Sanjūrokkei) =
"Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji".
神奈川沖浪裏: (Kanagawa oki nami ura) =
"Under the Wave off Kanagawa".
北斎改爲一筆: (Hokusai aratame Iitsu hitsu) =
"From the brush of Hokusai"
(The artist Hokusai often changed his name.)
[In the case of "The Great Wave" he signed by the name "Iitsu".]

Hawks started to learn more about Japanese culture, and language, to deliver the best possible results to his client's Modernizing the Masters commission request.

The Kanji (pictograph lettering) on the top left corner, have been changed to read something NEW:

"Capturing the Spirit of Hokusai Through Imitation"
川山登: (Kawa Yama Noboru) =
"Ascending Rivers Mountain"
海心波: (Kai Shin Nami) =
Voyaging Merrily Over the Wave"
"Going Merry After Hokusai" for short.
